Eligibility Criteria
We developed our eligibility criteria based on what we know about the climbing community and what we know about the reasons some people might be reluctant to join a group.
The BMC survey from 2024 gives lots of information:
“Climbers are largely male, white, heterosexual/straight, not religious, employed, and educated. Their income is modest (£21-£40k), which is likely to reflect their age and being at the start of their career post-university and/or they have chosen employment that does not attract a high salary.”
The survey also highlights that climbers report having a higher sense of positive wellbeing compared to the average person in the UK.
Our eligibility criteria aims to break down barriers, whether they are physical, social, emotional or financial to support young people in accessing climbing and the outdoors.
We can’t support everyone, but we are trying to address some of the barriers that young people face to accessing climbing which offers so many benefits to those who are lucky enough to climb.
We want to hear from you about our eligibility criteria if you feel we have overlooked something or you have any questions. Please get in touch via details at the bottom of the page.
We have developed it to try to reach those least represented within the climbing community, and take extra steps so that people who identify with these groups feel welcomed into climbing spaces.
Currently we can offer you free sessions if you meet our eligibility criteria. We prioritise young people who identify with multiple parts of the eligibility criteria.
